Low genius, small beer and educated nonsense.
Do you think people buy them in spite of or because of the fact that they are the boxiest, ugliest automotive monstrosities on the road today?

It has nothing to do with your false dichotomy of "...buy them in spite of or because of the fact that they are the boxiest, ugliest...".
It has to do with where they fit in the typology of automobile buyers. Remar Sutton, the guru of automobile-buying and selling, says that any car seller can determine with as few as three seemingly harmless questions, whether the poor sap (s)he has locked onto is a "payments-only" buyer or a "no more than.." buyer or any one of about a dozen clear
types.
But, the fish known as a "heatseeker" is the ultimate mark. No questions asked; no questions required.
The heatseeker comes in and places an order with the three first words out of his/her mouth: :"Gimme a...(Metropolitan or a Gremlin, or a Mustang, or a PT Cruiser or One of them Bugs-with-a-bud vase) It's the easiest sale of all--just fill in the blank with any asshole car that is blessed with the attribute of being terminally off-beat.
The heatseeker is every car seller's wet dream.
So, the Scion (unprounounceable as it is) is the new heatseeker target.
It is basically a Corolla with sharp (and costly) edges.
Once a heat seeker is near enough to what is giving him the hots, any car seller can do what they hafta do to cement the deal: "Well, there's quite waiting list for this hot seller, and a surcharge of 12% on top of MSRP, but let's write up the order while we still can".
